"markdown": "# HP EliteBook 840 G6 keyboard replacement\n\nSource: https://kaas.hpcloud.hp.com/pdf-public/pdf_12664225_en-US-1.pdf (printed pages 32–38, 45–47, 49). OEM-documented procedure; not bench-tested.\n\nThe complete US numbers are composed from HP table 5-6 base numbers and the United States -001 suffix in table 5-7, both on printed page 45. Match the existing backlight/privacy configuration and verify the product-specific spare before buying. Only US-English options are included.\n\n## Tools and parts\n\n- Suitable driver for bottom-cover captive screws\n- Phillips driver\n- Thin release tool for the designated release hole\n- Static-safe work surface\n\nDocumented spare options, subject to exact configuration verification:\n\n- `L14379-001` — US keyboard, no backlight. Source: printed page 45.\n- `L14377-001` — US keyboard, backlit. Source: printed page 45.\n- `L14378-001` — US keyboard, backlit, privacy. Source: printed page 45.\n\n## Preparation\n\nConfirm the service label says HP EliteBook 840 G6. These instructions have not been physically tested and should not be applied to another generation by appearance alone.\n\nSave your work, shut down through the operating system, unplug AC power, and disconnect external devices. Use a grounded, static-safe work area and keep screws organized. HP's preparation and bottom-cover procedures are on printed pages 32–38 (PDF pages 42–48).\n\nPlace the closed laptop upside down on a flat surface. Loosen the five captive screws and three inset captive screws in the bottom cover. Leave the captive screws with the cover. Beginning beneath the display at the upper-left corner shown in HP's diagram, carefully release and lift the cover. Follow the diagram if orientation is unclear. Disconnect the battery cable at the system board before working on the SSD, RAM, or keyboard.\n\n## Replacement\n\n1. After shared preparation, verify that the battery cable is disconnected. Remove the two Phillips M2.0 × 3.0 screws marked with keyboard symbols.\n\n2. Use the designated release hole near the fan shown on printed page 46. Press the back of the keyboard through that hole until it releases. Do not probe other openings or pull the keyboard free: ribbon cables remain attached.\n\n3. Turn the computer upright, with its front toward you, and open the display as far as possible. Lift the keyboard top and release its locating tabs as illustrated.\n\n4. Rotate the keyboard onto the palm rest without straining its cables. Release the system-board ZIF connectors and disconnect the main keyboard cable and pointing-stick cable. Disconnect the backlight cable on models that have it. Remove the keyboard.\n\n5. Install the replacement by reversing removal: seat the appropriate ribbon cables in their ZIF connectors and secure the latches, reposition the keyboard and its tabs, then reinstall the two keyboard screws.\n\n6. Reconnect the battery cable, refit the cover, and secure its captive screws before restoring AC power.\n\n## After assembly\n\nSuggested editorial check: test keys, pointing stick, and fitted backlight. These functions have not been physically tested for this guide.\n"
