OEM-documented procedure; not bench-tested.\n\nBack up needed data and prepare your recovery or migration method before opening the machine. Mechanical installation alone does not transfer Windows or personal files. HP lists several PCIe and SATA drive variants on printed page 39; this guide does not establish universal aftermarket-drive compatibility.\n\n## Tools and parts\n\n- Suitable driver for bottom-cover captive screws\n- Phillips driver\n- Static-safe work surface\n\n## Preparation\n\nConfirm the service label says HP EliteBook 840 G6. These instructions have not been physically tested and should not be applied to another generation by appearance alone.\n\nSave your work, shut down through the operating system, unplug AC power, and disconnect external devices. Use a grounded, static-safe work area and keep screws organized. HP's preparation and bottom-cover procedures are on printed pages 32–38 (PDF pages 42–48).\n\nPlace the closed laptop upside down on a flat surface. Loosen the five captive screws and three inset captive screws in the bottom cover. Leave the captive screws with the cover. Beginning beneath the display at the upper-left corner shown in HP's diagram, carefully release and lift the cover. Follow the diagram if orientation is unclear. Disconnect the battery cable at the system board before working on the SSD, RAM, or keyboard.\n\n## Replacement\n\n1. After the shared preparation, verify that the battery cable is disconnected from the system board.\n\n2. Remove the single Phillips M2.0 × 2.0 screw retaining the SSD.\n\n3. Pull the SSD away from its connector as illustrated on printed page 39. Avoid twisting the socket.\n\n4. Align the replacement drive notch with the connector and install it by reversing removal. Secure it with the original M2.0 × 2.0 screw.\n\n5. Reconnect the battery cable, reinstall the bottom cover, and secure its captive screws before reconnecting AC.\n\n## After assembly\n\nSuggested editorial check: confirm firmware detects the drive and complete your planned OS restoration or migration. Detection and successful boot have not been tested for this guide.\n"
