OEM-documented procedure; not bench-tested.\n\nThis covers the M.2 SSD, not the separate 2.5-inch hard-drive assembly on printed pp. 45–46. The 16 GB Optane module in the spare table is not presented as an interchangeable standalone data drive.\n\n## Tools and preparation\n\nPhillips driver appropriate to the fasteners, nonmarking/nonconductive opening tool, static-safe work surface, and screw organizer. Advanced keyboard work requires all tools specified in the complete OEM manual.\n\nConfirm the exact model is HP ProBook 440 G6. Save work, shut down through the operating system and disconnect external devices. Follow HP Battery Safe mode before opening: with the computer off and AC connected, press Windows + Backspace + Power; turn the computer on to initiate Battery Safe mode; after it powers off, disconnect AC (printed p. 36). In that mode it will not power on without AC. Use a grounded static-safe surface. Remove the two Phillips M2.0×5.0 cover screws and loosen the five captive Phillips screws. Starting under the display, use a nonconductive, nonmarking tool to release the cover; lift its rear and remove it (printed p. 37).\n\n## Procedure\n\n1. Back up required data and prepare OS recovery before opening. Complete preparation and remove the battery: Remove the two Phillips M2.0×4.0 battery screws. Lift the top of the battery, then use a tool to push back the retaining tab at its bottom-left corner, following the diagram on printed page 38. Do not apply force to the battery enclosure. Lift out the battery.\n\n2. Remove the Phillips M2.0×2.5 screw securing the M.2 SSD.\n\n3. Pull the module out of its slot at an angle. Align the replacement notch and reverse removal to install; secure with the original screw.\n\n4. Reinstall the battery, engage its retaining tab and restore its two M2.0×4.0 screws. Refit and secure the bottom cover before reconnecting AC.\n\n## After assembly\n\nSuggested check, not performed: verify the replaced component is detected and functions. For an SSD, restore/migrate the OS and data using a separately prepared recovery plan; hardware replacement does not transfer data. After full reassembly, reconnect AC and press Power to leave Battery Safe mode (HP printed p. 36).\n"
