How to replace the Dell Latitude 7490 battery
The Latitude 7490 uses a 3-cell or 4-cell battery under the base cover, held by one or two screws.
Source: every step below is paraphrased from the official Dell Latitude 7490 Owner's Manual (Dell, pp. 10-16). Screw sizes and torque values are quoted from the manual's own tables. The manual's illustrations show each step, so keep it open while you work. Service manuals are written for trained technicians; work at your own risk.
Applies to
Before you start
- Dell: discharge the battery fully before removing it, and do not crush, bend, pierce, heat or pry on it.
- If the battery is swollen and stuck, do not try to free it; contact Dell technical support.
Tools
- Phillips #0 and #1 screwdrivers
- Plastic scribe
Steps
- Prepare. Follow Dell's "Before working inside your computer" procedure.
- Remove the base cover. Loosen the eight M2.5 x 6.0 captive screws (Dell advises angling the screwdriver on the bottom two to avoid stripping them), release the cover edge with a plastic scribe and lift it off.
- Disconnect the battery. Unplug the battery cable from the system board. Dell says to do this right after removing the base cover for any repair.
- Remove the battery. Remove the M2.0 x 5.0 screws (one on a 3-cell battery, two on a 4-cell battery) and lift the battery out.
- Install the new battery. Route the cable through its clip and connect it, insert the lower edge into the chassis slot, seat the battery, refit the screws and base cover, then follow "After working inside your computer".
