Scope and notes
This guide covers battery replacement in the HP Chromebook 11 G6 Education Edition, using the HP Maintenance and Service Guide as the source. HP places the procedure in chapter 5, "Removal and replacement procedures" (printed page 19), which covers Authorized Service Provider only parts; the guide's cover states the document is intended for HP authorized service providers only, so treat this as authorized-service-provider work.
The battery removal procedure is printed on pages 25–26. Its prerequisite step points to "Keyboard/top cover" on printed page 20, and that section performs the bottom cover removal on printed pages 20–21. HP's chapter introduction (printed page 19) warns that as many as 44 screws must be removed, replaced, and/or loosened when servicing these parts.
Tools
Flat-bladed screwdriver, magnetic screwdriver, and Phillips P00 and P0 screwdrivers (HP "Tools required", printed page 14). The keyboard/top cover removal also needs a case utility tool or similar thin plastic tool to separate the front edge of the keyboard/top cover from the bottom cover (printed page 21). Work on a grounded, static-safe surface and sort the screws by position.
Documented OEM spare options
917725-855— 2-cell, 47-WHr, 6.15-AHr, Li-ion battery (includes cable); printed p.25, Battery part table.
This is the only battery entry HP documents for this model, printed in the Battery part table on page 25 and the parts catalog on page 10. Confirm the exact product and configuration before ordering.
Preparation
- Read the chapter 4 preliminary requirements (printed pages 14–18) first: the tools, plastic-parts, cable-and-connector and electrostatic-discharge rules apply to every step below.
- Save work and shut the computer down through the operating system. Disconnect all external devices, unplug the power cord from the AC outlet and unplug the AC adapter, then work on a grounded, static-safe surface.
- Remove the keyboard/top cover (printed page 20). That section first removes the bottom cover: the two Phillips M2.5×8.7 screws and the six Phillips M2.5×6.6 screws that secure it (printed pages 20–21).
- Turn the computer on its right side with the front toward you and open the computer. Use a case utility tool, or a similar thin plastic tool, to pry the front edge of the keyboard/top cover away from the bottom cover, then free the zero insertion force (ZIF) connector for the keyboard cable and unplug the keyboard cable from the system board (printed page 21).
- Release the ZIF connector to which the TouchPad cable is connected and disconnect the TouchPad cable from the system board, then remove the keyboard/top cover (printed pages 21–22).
Replacement
- Lift the tape that holds the battery cable connector to the system board (printed page 25).
- Disconnect the battery cable from the system board (printed page 26).
- Remove the two Phillips M2.0×4.1 screws that secure the battery to the bottom cover (printed page 26).
- Remove the battery (printed page 26).
Reassembly
- Fit the replacement battery and put back the two Phillips M2.0×4.1 screws that hold it to the bottom cover (printed page 26).
- Reconnect the battery cable to the system board (printed page 26).
- Put the keyboard/top cover back by reversing its removal: plug the TouchPad cable and the keyboard cable back into their ZIF connectors, then fit the keyboard/top cover down again and refit the bottom cover with its screws (printed page 21).
> CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer.
