Scope and notes
This guide covers display panel replacement in the HP Chromebook 11 G6 Education Edition, from the HP Maintenance and Service Guide. HP places the procedure in chapter 5, "Removal and replacement procedures" (printed p.19); the cover states the document is intended for HP authorized service providers only.
HP does not spare the display assembly as a single unit: the catalog lists the 11.6-in. display assembly as "spared at the subcomponent level only" (printed p.10), and the display assembly section repeats that it is spared at the subcomponent level (printed p.34). No complete hinge-up display assembly spare part number is printed for this model.
Tools
Flat-bladed screwdriver, magnetic screwdriver, and Phillips P00 and P0 screw drivers (HP "Tools required", printed p.14), plus a case utility tool or similar thin plastic tool (printed p.21). Work on a grounded, static-safe surface (printed p.16–18).
Documented OEM spare options
L14918-001- For use only on computer models equipped with an HD BrightView TouchScreen display assembly (printed p.38, p.12).L22362-001- For use only on computer models equipped with an AntiGlare TouchScreen display assembly (printed p.38, p.12).L14917-001- For use only on computer models equipped with non-TouchScreen display assembly (printed p.38, p.12).
One of the three applies, decided by the display assembly fitted, and the panel does not include the display panel cable (printed p.12).
Preparation
The bottom cover is fastened with the two Phillips M2.5×8.7 screws (printed page 20) and the six Phillips M2.5×6.6 screws (printed page 21).
- Shut down through the operating system, disconnect all external devices, and unplug the power cord from the AC outlet and the AC adapter from the computer (printed p.34).
- Remove the keyboard/top cover: take out the six Phillips M2.5 × 6.6 screws that hold the bottom cover to the computer (printed page 21), turn the computer so it rests on its right side with the front edge toward you and open it, work the front edge of the keyboard/top cover loose from the bottom cover with a case utility tool, or a similar thin plastic tool, release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connector for the keyboard cable and the ZIF connector for the TouchPad cable, unplug both cables from the system board, and remove the keyboard/top cover.
- Disconnect the battery cable from the system board: release the tape securing the battery cable connector (printed p.25), then disconnect the battery cable (printed p.26).
Replacement
- Disconnect the WLAN antenna cables at the WLAN module terminals and the display webcam/microphone cable from the system board, then release that cable from the retention clips and routing channels in the bottom cover (printed p.34).
- Release the adhesive strip securing the display panel cable to the system board, unplug the display panel cable from the system board, and release it from the retention clips and routing channels in the bottom cover (printed p.35).
- Swing the lid back as far as it will go (printed p.35).
- Remove the display bezel by releasing its top, left and right, then bottom edge (printed p.35–36). HP cautions that the double-sided adhesive inside the bezel bottom edge can cause injury or bezel damage.
- Take out the six Phillips PM2.0×2.8 screws that hold the display panel and the display panel bracket to the display back cover, then take off the display panel bracket (printed page 37).
- Raise the top edge of the display panel, tip it up and forward so it rests upside down on the computer, release the adhesive support strip that holds the display panel cable connector on the display panel, unplug the display panel cable from the display panel, and take the display panel out (printed page 38).
Reassembly
- Reverse HP's removal procedure for the display assembly and put it back together: refit the replacement display panel in the display back cover, reconnect the display panel cable, put back the display panel bracket and its screws, and refit the display bezel in reverse of the release order (printed page 41).
- Plug the WLAN antenna cables back into the Main and Aux terminals on the WLAN module, reconnect the display webcam/microphone cable to the system board, route that cable back into the retention clips and routing channels built into the bottom cover, and resecure the adhesive strip that holds the display panel cable to the system board (printed page 34).
- Reconnect the battery cable to the system board (printed page 25), put the keyboard/top cover back on the bottom cover (printed page 20), and tighten the bottom cover screws.
> CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer.
