Scope and notes

This guide covers display panel replacement in the HP Chromebook 14 G5. The source is the HP Maintenance and Service Guide, chapter 5, "Removal and replacement procedures" (printed page 20); the cover states the document is intended for HP authorized service providers only, so treat it as authorized service provider work.

The manual's display section, "Display assembly" (printed p.40), notes that the display assembly is spared at the subcomponent level; no complete display assembly spare part is listed, and the panel is one of them. That section also documents the wider display assembly removal; this guide follows the panel steps. Panel steps are printed on pages 43–45; prerequisites point to "Keyboard/top cover" on printed page 21 and "Battery" on printed page 27, so pages cited run 21–45.

Tools

Flat-bladed screwdriver, magnetic screwdriver, and Phillips P00 and P0 screw drivers (HP "Tools required", printed p.15).

All four are printed on pages 45 and 13, under "Display panel (does not include display panel cable)"; match the fitted display assembly.

Preparation

  1. Shut down the computer through the operating system, disconnect external devices, unplug the power cord from the AC outlet, then disconnect the AC adapter (printed pages 21 and 40).
  2. Take the keyboard/top cover off (printed page 23): pull off the rear rubber feet and the rubber screw covers and the two bottom cover screws printed on the page before, then take out the seven Phillips M2.5×8.5 screws that hold the bottom cover to the computer, set the computer on its right side with the front toward you, open it, and work a case utility tool down the front edge of the keyboard/top cover to free it from the bottom cover.
  3. Release the ZIF connectors to which the keyboard and TouchPad cables are connected, disconnect both cables from the system board, and remove the keyboard/top cover (printed pages 23–24).
  4. Disconnect the battery cable from the system board (printed p.27).

Replacement

  1. Release the adhesive strip that holds the display panel cable to the system board, unplug that cable, and open the lid as far as it will go (printed page 41).
  2. Take the display bezel off (printed page 41): release the display bezel top edge from the display assembly, then the left and right edges, and last the bottom edge.

> CAUTION: There is double-sided adhesive (3) on the inside edge of the display bezel bottom edge. Use caution when releasing the display bezel bottom edge. Failure to follow this caution can result in personal injury or damage to the display bezel.

  1. Take out the four Phillips PM2.0×2.8 screws that hold the display panel to the display back cover (printed page 43), then raise the top edge of the display panel and turn it up and forward until it lies upside down on the computer.
  2. Free the display panel cable out of the clips and the routing channel in the display back cover bottom edge, release the adhesive support strip that holds the display panel cable connector to the panel, unplug the cable from the panel, and take the display panel out (printed page 45).

Reassembly

  1. Fit the replacement display panel into the display back cover, plug the display panel cable back in, put the adhesive support strip back over it, route the cable into the clips and the routing channel in the back cover bottom edge, and refit the four Phillips PM2.0×2.8 screws (printed page 43).
  2. Press the display bezel back into the display assembly along its top edge, its left and right edges and its bottom edge, then plug the display panel cable back into the system board (printed page 41).
  3. Put the keyboard/top cover back (printed page 22): plug the keyboard and TouchPad cables into their ZIF connectors again, settle the cover onto the bottom cover, refit the two Phillips M2.5×9.3 screws and the seven screws that hold the bottom cover to the computer, and reconnect the battery cable to the system board.

> CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer.
