Scope and notes
This guide covers keyboard replacement in the HP Chromebook 14 G5, from the HP Maintenance and Service Guide. The manual's section is titled "Keyboard/top cover" (printed page 21): the keyboard is not spared separately from the top cover, and HP replaces the two as one assembly, which also carries the TouchPad (a separate subassembly, printed page 26). The spare part numbers HP documents are therefore keyboard/top cover assemblies, not standalone keyboards.
The procedure sits in chapter 5, "Removal and replacement procedures" (printed page 20), which covers Authorized Service Provider only parts that should only be accessed by an authorized service provider, as the cover of the guide states. The keyboard/top cover removal procedure is printed on pages 21–24.
Tools
Flat-bladed screwdriver, magnetic screwdriver, and Phillips P00 and P0 screw drivers (HP "Tools required", printed page 15). The procedure also calls for a case utility tool or similar thin plastic tool to separate the front edge of the assembly from the bottom cover (printed page 23). Work on a grounded, static-safe surface (printed pages 17–19) and keep each subassembly and its screws away from the work area (printed page 15).

Preparation
- Shut down the computer; if it is unclear whether it is off or in hibernation, turn it on and shut it down through the operating system. Disconnect all external devices, unplug the power cord from the AC outlet and the AC adapter (printed pages 21–22).
- Remove the bottom cover (printed pages 22–23):
- Remove the two rear rubber feet and the rubber screw covers marked "0G3A" (three), "FL-0G3A" (one), "FM-0G3A" (two) and "FR-0G3A" (one) (printed page 22). - Remove the two Phillips M2.5×9.3 and seven Phillips M2.5×8.5 screws that secure the bottom cover (printed pages 22–23).
- Set the computer on its right side with the front toward you, open it, and work a case utility tool or a similar thin plastic tool into the front edge of the keyboard/top cover to separate it from the bottom cover (printed page 23).
- Release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connectors for the keyboard and TouchPad cables and disconnect both cables from the system board (printed page 23).
Replacement
- Remove the keyboard/top cover (printed page 24). HP prints no keyboard-only removal step: the keyboard is released with the top cover, and the backlight and keyboard cables travel with the assembly.
- Put the replacement keyboard/top cover back (printed page 24): seat it on the bottom cover, plug the keyboard and TouchPad cables into their ZIF connectors, and press the front edge down into the bottom cover.
Reassembly
- Put the bottom cover back (printed page 22): refit the rear rubber feet and the rubber screw covers, refit the two Phillips M2.5×9.3 screws and the seven screws that hold the bottom cover to the computer.
> CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer.
