Scope and notes
This guide covers WLAN module replacement in the HP Chromebook 14 G5, from the HP Maintenance and Service Guide. The procedure sits in chapter 5, "Removal and replacement procedures" (printed page 20), which covers Authorized Service Provider only parts; the cover of the guide states that the document is intended for HP authorized service providers only. The procedure is printed on pages 28–29; its prerequisites point to "Keyboard/top cover" (printed page 21) and "Battery" (printed page 27), so the pages cited here run from 21 to 29.
The module is a plug-in card in a slot, and HP's caution on printed page 28 requires a wireless module authorized for use in the computer by the agency that regulates wireless devices in the country or region.
Tools
Flat-bladed screwdriver, magnetic screwdriver, and Phillips P00 and P0 screw drivers (printed page 15). Work on a grounded, static-safe surface (printed pages 17–19) and keep each subassembly and its screws away from the work area (printed page 15).

Preparation
- Turn off the computer; if it is unclear whether it is off or in hibernation, turn it on and shut it down through the operating system. Unplug the power cord and the AC adapter, and disconnect all external devices (printed page 28).
- Take the keyboard/top cover off (printed page 23): pull off the rear rubber feet and the rubber screw covers and the two bottom cover screws printed on the page before, then take out the seven Phillips M2.5×8.5 screws that hold the bottom cover to the computer, set the computer on its right side with the front toward you, open it, work a case utility tool down the front edge of the keyboard/top cover to free it from the bottom cover, release the ZIF connectors and unplug the keyboard and TouchPad cables from the system board, and lift the keyboard/top cover away.
- Disconnect the battery cable from the system board, prerequisite step 5 of the WLAN module procedure (printed page 28). HP's cross-reference points to the Battery section on printed page 27, where the pack is released with four Phillips M2.0×4.1 screws; only the disconnection is required here.
Replacement
- Disconnect the WLAN antenna cables from the terminals on the WLAN module (printed page 28), then remove the Phillips PM2.0×2.9 screw that secures it to the computer; the module tilts up (printed page 29).
- Release the shielding material that secures the WLAN module to the slot (printed page 29); HP prints a separate spare part number for it, which is not listed above.
- Take the WLAN module out of the slot, pulling it away at an angle (printed page 29).
Reassembly
- Put the replacement WLAN module in (printed page 29): seat it in the slot, refit the shielding material, refit the Phillips PM2.0×2.9 screw, plug the antenna cables back into the module terminals, and reconnect the battery cable to the system board.
- Put the keyboard/top cover back (printed page 23): plug the keyboard and TouchPad cables into their ZIF connectors again, refit the two bottom cover screws printed on the preceding page and the seven Phillips M2.5×8.5 screws that hold the bottom cover to the computer, and press the front edge of the keyboard/top cover down into the bottom cover.
> CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer.
