Scope and notes
This guide covers battery replacement in the HP Chromebook 14 G7, using the HP Maintenance and Service Guide as the source. HP places the procedure in chapter 5, "Removal and replacement procedures for authorized service provider parts" (printed page 27), and the cover of the guide states that the document is intended for HP authorized service providers only. Treat this procedure as authorized-service-provider work.
The battery removal procedure is printed on pages 34–35. The prerequisite steps it lists point to "Preparation for disassembly" and "Top cover/keyboard" on printed page 29, and the top cover/keyboard procedure itself runs to printed page 32, so the pages cited in this guide run from 29 to 35. HP's chapter introduction (printed page 28) warns that servicing the parts described in the chapter means removing, replacing, or loosening as many as 48 screws, and that each screw size and location has to be noted during removal and replacement.
The pack in this model is a 2-cell Li-ion battery. Do not puncture, crush or deform it, and do not apply sharp tools to it.
Tools
Magnetic Phillips P0 screwdriver, nonconductive nonmarking pry tool, keyboard removal tool, and forceps or tweezers (HP "Tools required", printed page 17). Use a grounded, static-safe work surface and keep the screws sorted by their original position, since this procedure crosses several different screw sizes.

This is the battery entry HP documents for this model. Confirm the exact product and configuration before ordering; a table entry is not a statement of current availability, serial-specific fit, or a shopping recommendation.
Preparation
- Save work and shut the computer down through the operating system. Disconnect all external devices, unplug the AC power cord from the outlet and disconnect the adapter from the computer, then work on a grounded, static-safe surface.
- Prepare the computer for disassembly (printed page 29), then remove the top cover/keyboard. Flip the computer over so the front edge faces you. Take out the two Phillips PM2.5×8.6 screws. Also take out the six Phillips PM2.5×7.2 screws that hold the top cover/keyboard to the base enclosure.
- Lay the open computer down on the display back cover. Put the keyboard removal tool into the rear screw holes of the top cover/keyboard and press until the rear edge lets go of the base enclosure.
- Raise the rear edge of the top cover/keyboard, stopping where the backlight, keyboard and touchpad cables will not let it go further. Free the zero insertion force (ZIF) connectors and unplug the touchpad cable, the keyboard cable and, where fitted, the backlight cable, then lift the top cover/keyboard away. Each time the top cover/keyboard comes off, HP asks that the thermal material on the system board and on the top cover surface be checked and, if needed, cleaned thoroughly.
Replacement
- With the top cover/keyboard off, disconnect the battery cable from the system board by its connector rather than by the wires (printed page 35).
- Remove the four Phillips M2.0 × 4.2 screws that secure the battery to the computer (printed page 35).
- Remove the battery shield. HP prints a separate spare part number for that shield; it is not part of the battery kit and it is not one of the options listed above.
- Remove the battery.
Reassembly
- Fit the replacement battery, refit the battery shield, and put back the four Phillips M2.0 × 4.2 screws that hold the battery to the computer.
- Reconnect the battery cable to the system board.
- Plug the touchpad, keyboard and backlight cables back into their ZIF connectors, lower the top cover/keyboard into the base enclosure, and refit the screws that hold the top cover/keyboard to the base enclosure (printed page 31).
> IMPORTANT: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer.
