Scope and notes
This guide covers keyboard replacement in the HP Chromebook 14 G7, from the HP Maintenance and Service Guide. The keyboard is not serviced on its own in this manual: the procedure and the spare part table are filed under "Top cover/keyboard" (printed page 29), and the keyboard is part of that assembly. HP replaces the top cover together with the keyboard, so a keyboard replacement means replacing the whole top cover/keyboard assembly. The backlight and non-backlight versions are different assemblies.
HP places the procedure in chapter 5, "Removal and replacement procedures for authorized service provider parts" (printed page 27), which states that the components it describes should be accessed only by an authorized service provider; its introduction (printed page 28) warns that servicing these parts means removing, replacing, or loosening as many as 48 screws.
The removal procedure is printed on pages 29–32, and its only prerequisite is "Preparation for disassembly", cross-referenced by the manual to printed page 29. The spare part kit includes the keyboard cable.
Tools
Magnetic Phillips P0 screwdriver, nonconductive nonmarking pry tool, keyboard removal tool, and forceps or tweezers (HP "Tools required", printed page 17). Sort the screws by their original position.

Preparation
- Save work and shut the computer down through the operating system, disconnect all external devices, unplug the AC power cord and disconnect the adapter, then work on a grounded, static-safe surface.
- Prepare the computer for disassembly (printed page 29). This is the only prerequisite the manual lists for the top cover/keyboard; no bottom cover removal is documented for this model.
Replacement
- Flip the computer over so the front edge faces you, take out the two Phillips PM2.5×8.6 screws and the six Phillips PM2.5×7.2 screws that hold the top cover/keyboard to the base enclosure, then open the computer and lay it on the display back cover (printed page 30).
- Push a keyboard removal tool into the rear screw holes of the top cover/keyboard until the rear edge comes free of the base enclosure, then set the computer down with the base enclosure on the work surface (printed page 31).
- Raise the rear edge of the top cover/keyboard off the computer, stopping where the backlight, keyboard and touchpad cables allow no more (printed page 31).
- Release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connectors to which the touchpad, keyboard, and backlight cables are connected, and disconnect each cable from the system board (printed page 31).
- Remove the top cover/keyboard (printed page 32).
- Check the thermal material on the system board and on the top cover/keyboard surface, clean it thoroughly where needed, and take new thermal material from the spare part kits for the top cover/keyboard and the system board (printed page 32).
Reassembly
- Fit the replacement top cover/keyboard assembly back onto the computer (printed page 32).
- Plug the touchpad, keyboard and backlight cables back into their ZIF connectors on the system board (printed page 31).
- Lower the rear edge of the top cover/keyboard into the base enclosure and refit the two Phillips PM2.5×8.6 and six Phillips PM2.5×7.2 screws that hold the top cover/keyboard to the base enclosure (printed page 30).
> IMPORTANT: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer.
