Scope and notes
This guide covers keyboard replacement in the HP Chromebook x360 11 G3 Education Edition, using the HP Maintenance and Service Guide. The procedure is in chapter 5, "Removal and replacement procedures" (printed page 24), and the cover states that the document is intended for HP authorized service providers only.
The keyboard is not offered as a separate part in this manual: HP documents it only inside the keyboard/top cover assembly, whose removal procedure is headed "Remove the keyboard/top cover" (printed pages 26–28). A keyboard replacement here means replacing that assembly, which also carries the touchpad and the keyboard camera on some models.
That procedure lists no prerequisite removals, so the pages cited for it run from 26 to 28. Step 14 disconnects the keyboard camera cable; the manual covers the keyboard camera and its cable separately (printed pages 32 and 33), which are not part of this guide.
Tools
Flat-bladed screwdriver, magnetic screwdriver, and Phillips P0 and P1 screwdrivers (HP "Tools required", printed page 19), plus the thin plastic tool used to separate the keyboard/top cover from the bottom cover.

These are the United States variants HP lists for this model (Table 3-1, printed pages 13–15); the same tables list many country and region variants.
Preparation
- Shut down the computer through the operating system (printed page 26); if its state is unclear, turn it on and shut it down again. Disconnect all external devices, unplug the power cord from the AC outlet, then unplug the AC adapter.
- Close the lid and turn the unit over so the front edge faces you, then take out or loosen the screws that hold the keyboard/top cover to the bottom cover: two Phillips M2.0×5.7 screws, two Phillips M2.0×5.7 captive screws and two Phillips M2.5×8.7 screws (printed page 26).
Replacement
- Open the unit and lay it on its right side with the back edge toward you, then work a thin plastic tool into the seam to free the rear edge of the keyboard/top cover from the bottom cover (printed page 27). Stand it right side up with the back edge toward you, open the lid as far as it will go, and raise the rear edge of the keyboard/top cover until the keyboard and touchpad cables pull tight.
- On the system board, release the ZIF connector that holds the touchpad board cable and unplug the touchpad cable. Lift the shield off the keyboard cable ZIF connector, release that ZIF connector and unplug the keyboard cable, then release the ZIF connector for the keyboard camera cable and unplug it (printed page 27).
- Take off the keyboard/top cover (printed page 28).
- Set the replacement keyboard/top cover down on the bottom cover, then plug the touchpad board cable, the keyboard cable and the keyboard camera cable back into their ZIF connectors (printed page 27).
Reassembly
- Set the keyboard/top cover back down onto the bottom cover and bring the rear edge of the cover together with the bottom cover again (printed page 27).
- Put the keyboard/top cover screws back: two Phillips M2.0×5.7 screws, two Phillips M2.0×5.7 captive screws and two Phillips M2.5×8.7 screws (printed page 26).
> IMPORTANT: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer.
That caution is printed on printed page 19, in the chapter 4 service considerations on cables and connectors.
