HP EliteBook 830 G5 fan replacement (heat sink stays installed)
Step-by-step HP EliteBook 830 G5 fan replacement paraphrased from HP's official Maintenance and Service Guide, with page citations.
HP service classification: Authorized Service Provider chapter; HP restricts access to authorized service providers because damage or warranty loss can result.
Labels: DOCUMENTED = taken from HP's manual; PROPOSED = our own joining or ordering of HP's directions, not an HP instruction; UNPERFORMED = a suggested check that has not been carried out.
Applies to
HP EliteBook 830 G5. Confirm the exact model on the service label before starting.
Service classification: Authorized Service Provider chapter; HP restricts access to authorized service providers because damage or warranty loss can result. HP manual, printed 53 / PDF 63
Scope: Complete supplied fan module; heat sink stays installed; no impeller/motor rebuild.
Applicability and parts
- Replace the complete documented fan module, retaining the installed heat sink and its thermal joint. No bare impeller/motor rebuilding or heat-sink replacement is covered.
- The fan table gives one fan spare for this manual; this does not establish serial-specific compatibility or a graphics conversion.
DOCUMENTED manual table options follow. A table entry is not serial-specific fit, present availability, upgrade approval or a shopping recommendation. Check the actual product/configuration before selecting a spare.
| Spare | Documented description / constraint | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| L13679-001 | Fan module; exact model/product match required | HP manual, printed 65 / PDF 75 |
Tools and handling
- Nonconductive nonmarking case tool
- ESD protection and screw organizer
- Phillips P0 driver plus Torx T8 battery driver
- Thin keyboard-release tool/screwdriver used only in the illustrated release hole
The model-specific preparation and handling citations are included in the first step. Use the correct driver for the actual head. Do not borrow screw, Battery Safe, keyboard-cable or memory-slot rules from another HP model.
Ordered procedure
DOCUMENTED steps paraphrase HP. Reassembly expands HP’s reverse-procedure directions. Any combined order identified as PROPOSED is our own synthesis of those directions, not a separate HP or bench-verified instruction. No numeric torque or unprovided latch motion is added.
- Prepare. Confirm the exact model/product label and matching replacement configuration before opening. Shut down through the operating system (wake and shut down if uncertain about sleep/hibernation); unplug external devices and AC power. Work on a clean ESD-protected surface with grounded handling precautions; handle boards/modules by edges, keep liquids away, and sort screws by original location. Do not bend, crush, puncture or use a sharp tool against a battery. Stop for a swollen/damaged pack or a hardware/connector mismatch. (DOCUMENTED) HP manual, printed 38 / PDF 48; HP manual, printed 33 / PDF 43; HP manual, printed 34 / PDF 44; HP manual, printed 35 / PDF 45; HP manual, printed 36 / PDF 46; HP manual, printed 37 / PDF 47
- Access. With the closed computer supported upside down, loosen five ordinary captive screws plus two inset captive screws. Start releasing the cover under the display with a nonmarking case tool, then free the cover and lift it away. Keep each fastener at its original location; do not detach captive screws. (DOCUMENTED) HP manual, printed 38 / PDF 48; HP manual, printed 39 / PDF 49
- Isolate. Disconnect the battery cable from the system board by its connector, not its wires. Remove the 5 Torx T8 2.5 × 4.0 battery screws. Rotate the battery top upward and lift it out; retain the bottom tab/clip relationship for reassembly. (DOCUMENTED) HP manual, printed 40 / PDF 50; HP manual, printed 41 / PDF 51
- Access. Remove the 3 Phillips M2.0 × 3.0 screws marked with the keyboard symbol from the underside. Use the illustrated keyboard-release hole near the fan and a thin tool to release the keyboard back. Do not probe arbitrary openings. (DOCUMENTED) HP manual, printed 50 / PDF 60; HP manual, printed 51 / PDF 61
- Access. Turn the computer upright with the front toward you and open the display within its normal range. Lift the keyboard top edge, then rotate the keyboard onto the palm rest without pulling its attached ribbons. (DOCUMENTED) HP manual, printed 51 / PDF 61; HP manual, printed 52 / PDF 62
- Access. Support the keyboard, release the actual ZIF locking members without guessing a latch direction, and disconnect optional backlight (callout 2, if fitted), then main keyboard (callout 3); no separate pointing-stick cable is listed here. Lift away the keyboard. Stop rather than force an unfamiliar latch. (DOCUMENTED) HP manual, printed 51 / PDF 61; HP manual, printed 52 / PDF 62
- Remove. With the computer upright and open within its normal range, remove the 2 Phillips M2.0 × 3.0 fan screws exposed beneath the removed keyboard. Keep these separate from the keyboard screws. Close the display and support the computer upside down. (DOCUMENTED) HP manual, printed 65 / PDF 75
- Remove. Disconnect the fan cable from the system board by its connector. Loosen the 3 captive Phillips fan screws and lift out the fan module. Captive-screw dimensions are not supplied in this fan procedure. Leave the separate heat sink installed. (DOCUMENTED) HP manual, printed 65 / PDF 75; HP manual, printed 66 / PDF 76
- Install. Position the matching replacement fan and secure the 3 captive Phillips screws. Reconnect the fan cable along its original route. Turn upright and restore the 2 under-keyboard Phillips M2.0 × 3.0 fan screws before replacing the keyboard. No numerical torque or fan screw tightening sequence is specified. (DOCUMENTED reverse-procedure direction) HP manual, printed 65 / PDF 75; HP manual, printed 66 / PDF 76
- Restore. Support the keyboard on the palm rest, seat its main keyboard and, if fitted, backlight ribbons in their original ZIF connectors and secure the locking members. Refit the keyboard tabs/edges without trapping ribbons, rotate it into place, then close and turn the computer over. Restore its 3 underside Phillips M2.0 × 3.0 keyboard screws. (DOCUMENTED reverse-procedure direction) HP manual, printed 50 / PDF 60; HP manual, printed 51 / PDF 61; HP manual, printed 52 / PDF 62
- Restore. Once the keyboard and fan are restored and checked, engage the battery bottom tabs in the chassis clips and rotate it down. Restore the 5 Torx T8 2.5 × 4.0 battery screws; reconnect the battery cable after these internal checks. (PROPOSED combined reassembly order, using OEM reverse direction) HP manual, printed 40 / PDF 50; HP manual, printed 41 / PDF 51
- Close. Check that every cable is seated and routed clear of the cover and that no screw/tool remains inside. Refit and seat the bottom cover, engaging its clips; restore five ordinary captive screws plus two inset captive screws to their original holes. No numerical torque is supplied here. (PROPOSED combined reassembly order, following OEM reverse-procedure directions) HP manual, printed 38 / PDF 48; HP manual, printed 39 / PDF 49
Heat-sink and thermal-material boundary
Do not lift the heat sink during this guide. The separate heat-sink section specifies L13680-001; four captive heat-sink screws; CPU/mating surface material. If a thermal joint is disturbed, stop this fan-only guide and follow the correct separate OEM heat-sink procedure and its matching replacement-material kit/instructions. Clean and renew specified material each time that joint is opened. This guide does not supply pad thickness, paste quantity, torque or an invented tightening pattern. Preserve stamped removal order where specified; do not infer a new installation sequence. HP manual, printed 54 / PDF 64; HP manual, printed 55 / PDF 65
Proposed checks — all unperformed
- UNPERFORMED: after full reassembly, power on and check for firmware fan/startup errors, abnormal rubbing/noise and unobstructed vents.
- UNPERFORMED: use available HP diagnostics and observe temperature/fan behavior during ordinary operation. A temperature-controlled fan need not spin immediately at boot; this is not a benchmark or cooling-performance certification. Shut down if a fan error, abnormal heat or mechanical interference appears; isolate power before reopening.
