Applies to

HP EliteBook 840 G6. Confirm the exact model on the service label before starting.

HP instructs readers to update to the latest BIOS before adding memory. Perform any needed firmware work while the laptop is assembled, following HP instructions. The spare table is not a claim about the maximum supported capacity or every aftermarket module.

Preparation

Confirm the service label says HP EliteBook 840 G6. These instructions have not been physically tested and should not be applied to another generation by appearance alone.

Save your work, shut down through the operating system, unplug AC power, and disconnect external devices. Use a grounded, static-safe work area and keep screws organized. HP's preparation and bottom-cover procedures are on printed pages 32–38 (PDF pages 42–48).

Place the closed laptop upside down on a flat surface. Loosen the five captive screws and three inset captive screws in the bottom cover. Leave the captive screws with the cover. Beginning beneath the display at the upper-left corner shown in HP's diagram, carefully release and lift the cover. Follow the diagram if orientation is unclear. Disconnect the battery cable at the system board before working on the SSD, RAM, or keyboard.

Replacement

  1. After shared preparation, verify that the battery cable is disconnected. Locate the two side-by-side memory sockets.
  2. Spread the retaining tabs on either side of the module. Its free edge will rise.
  3. Slide the module away from the socket at the released angle. Handle it by its edges.
  4. Align the replacement notch with the socket, insert the module at the removal angle, then lower it until both retaining tabs secure it. If installing only one module, use the socket labeled 1. Socket 2 is the expansion socket.
  5. Reconnect the battery cable and refit and secure the bottom cover before restoring external power.

After assembly

Suggested editorial check: confirm the expected memory total in firmware or the operating system. No physical memory installation or diagnostic run was performed.
