HP EliteBook 840 G7 DC-in power connector cable replacement

Step-by-step HP EliteBook 840 G7 DC-in cable replacement paraphrased from HP's official Maintenance and Service Guide, with page citations.

Source: paraphrased from HP's official Maintenance and Service Guide (PDF, printed pages 28, 30–31, 33–34, 43–44, 48–49). Not bench-tested. We have not performed this repair; keep HP's manual open for its illustrations. Scope restrictions below are part of the guide: do not apply it to other models, generations or configurations. Service manuals are written for trained technicians; work at your own risk.

Labels: DOCUMENTED = taken from HP's manual; PROPOSED = our own joining or ordering of HP's directions, not an HP instruction; UNPERFORMED = a suggested check that has not been carried out.

Applies to

HP EliteBook 840 G7. Confirm the exact model on the service label before starting.

Replace only the barrel/DC-in power connector cable assembly; standalone USB-C repair is outside the supported route.

Authorized service provider only for target/internal board-level assembly access; a CSR cover chapter does not make this target CSR. HP printed 43, PDF 53

Parts, configuration and tools

M15626-001: Power connector cable, not the USB board, AC adapter or power button. HP printed 48, PDF 58

Exact HP EliteBook 840 G7; confirm service label, original assembly and connector/routing configuration before selection. Manual spare is evidence for this model, not serial-specific fit approval. Other generations, visually similar parts and unlisted regional/configuration substitutions; no live availability or replacement supersession verified. HP printed 48, PDF 58

Magnetic Phillips P1; nonconductive, nonmarking pry tool; grounded ESD workstation and strap. Tweezers are a general manual tool, not for touching battery or shorting contacts. HP printed 28, PDF 38

Input-route status (each retained separately):

Source findings and boundaries

Cover removal and battery-cable isolation suffice for this component. No WLAN/WWAN terminal, display, fan, heat sink or system-board removal is specified; the inherited G7 WLAN gate is not traversed or resolved. Basis: OEM text; diagram where applicable. HP printed 48, PDF 58

Lift and restore the battery-connector tape; leave the battery pack and its four retention screws installed. Basis: OEM text; diagram where applicable. HP printed 44, PDF 54; HP printed 48, PDF 58

Right-side USB-C power/Thunderbolt ports and the barrel connector are separate external routes. This guide covers only the documented barrel connector cable. No standalone USB-C connector replacement method is supplied in this manual. Basis: OEM port descriptions and component procedures; bounded absence finding. HP printed 6, PDF 16; HP printed 7, PDF 17; HP printed 48, PDF 58; HP printed 49, PDF 59; HP printed 57, PDF 67; HP printed 58, PDF 68

The USB-board illustration places the removable USB-A board on the left; it is not evidence of a right-side USB-C charging-port repair. Apparent USB-C/main-board association is a layout inference, not a statement that the port is soldered or physically nonrepairable. Basis: OEM diagrams; explicitly labeled layout inference. Ordered replacement procedure

  1. prepare — Save work, shut down normally through the operating system, disconnect AC power and all external devices. Use a flat grounded ESD-protected workstation and grounded wrist strap; avoid contacts and circuitry, and organize removed hardware. Basis: OEM shutdown/ESD precautions plus editorial organization. HP printed 33, PDF 43; HP printed 30, PDF 40; HP printed 31, PDF 41
  2. access — Loosen the five captive Phillips bottom-cover screws. Starting near the hinges, use the nonconductive, nonmarking tool to release the cover edges; lift the cover away. Basis: OEM procedure paraphrased. HP printed 33, PDF 43; HP printed 34, PDF 44
  3. isolate — Lift the tape over the battery-cable connector and disconnect the battery cable from the system board. Leave the battery pack and its four mounting screws installed. Avoid puncturing the battery or touching its contacts with metal. Basis: OEM procedure paraphrased. HP printed 43, PDF 53; HP printed 44, PDF 54; HP printed 48, PDF 58
  4. disconnect — Disconnect the power-connector cable from the system board at callout 1, then free it from its retaining clip. Keep the original cable path and connector seat identifiable. Basis: OEM procedure paraphrased. HP printed 48, PDF 58
  5. remove — Remove the single Phillips M2.0 × 4.0 retaining screw at callout 2. Lift the power connector cable assembly out of its chassis seat at callout 3. Basis: OEM procedure paraphrased. HP printed 48, PDF 58; HP printed 49, PDF 59
  6. install — Seat the matching M15626-001 barrel power-connector cable assembly in its original chassis location. Reinstall its single Phillips M2.0 × 4.0 screw; no torque value is specified. Basis: OEM reverse installation expanded. HP printed 48, PDF 58; HP printed 49, PDF 59
  7. reconnect — Return the power cable to its original clip and reconnect its system-board plug. Check that the assembly is seated and the cable cannot be pinched during closure. Basis: OEM reverse installation and cable-placement precaution. HP printed 28, PDF 38; HP printed 48, PDF 58; HP printed 49, PDF 59
  8. restore — After checking target retention and cable routing, reconnect the battery cable to the system board and restore the tape over its connector. No battery pack removal occurred. Basis: OEM reverse battery isolation and editorial inspection join. HP printed 44, PDF 54; HP printed 48, PDF 58
  9. close — Refit the bottom cover, engage the edges and tighten its five captive Phillips screws. Restore external connections and AC only after the computer is fully closed. Basis: OEM reverse-cover procedure; editorial closed-unit restoration. HP printed 33, PDF 43; HP printed 34, PDF 44

Proposed checks and review limits

UNPERFORMED editorial check, only after full closure and safe restoration: with the computer closed and its already matched original AC adapter, observe ordinary startup and AC recognition; this is not diagnosis or proof of charging repair.

No physical work, live electrical probing, mains-adapter opening, shorting, parts purchase, production import, publication or deployment occurred. Partial/unsupported records are evidence notes, not safe executable instructions. OEM service classification and serial-specific fit still require reviewer attention.
