HP EliteBook 850 G5 keyboard replacement

Step-by-step HP EliteBook 850 G5 keyboard replacement paraphrased from HP's official Maintenance and Service Guide, with page citations.

Source: paraphrased from HP's official Maintenance and Service Guide (PDF, printed pages 33–39, 47–49, 51). Not bench-tested. We have not performed this repair; keep HP's manual open for its illustrations. Scope restrictions below are part of the guide: do not apply it to other models, generations or configurations. Service manuals are written for trained technicians; work at your own risk.

Labels: DOCUMENTED = taken from HP's manual; PROPOSED = our own joining or ordering of HP's directions, not an HP instruction; UNPERFORMED = a suggested check that has not been carried out.

Applies to

HP EliteBook 850 G5. Confirm the exact model on the service label before starting.

Scope and service classification

This covers the separate keyboard on HP EliteBook 850 G5, with the existing top cover retained. HP places the keyboard procedure in chapter 5, Customer Self-Repair (printed pp.47-49 / PDF pp.57-59); regional/program eligibility and warranty conditions on printed p.38 / PDF p.48 apply. The front notice (printed iii / PDF 3) also distinguishes chapter-5 and chapter-6 parts. Chapter 6 starts with broad no-user-replaceable-parts wording (printed p.50 / PDF p.60) while limiting its procedures to service providers. Preserve this wording tension: chapter placement is DOCUMENTED, but unrestricted customer authorization is not established. Consult HP/service coverage if eligibility is uncertain.

This is a separate keyboard procedure with bottom-cover access. It does not require the extensive top-cover teardown from the earlier assignment.

Restrictions and stop conditions

  • US-English only. Match exact product configuration, backlight and privacy variant before ordering. OEM table options do not establish serial-specific fit or aftermarket compatibility.
  • Shut down and remove AC/external devices; remove the bottom cover and disconnect the main battery cable. Physical battery removal is not listed as a prerequisite for this keyboard procedure.
  • No top-cover, system-board, display, fan, RAM or SSD removal is required by this keyboard procedure. Do not import the earlier G7/ProBook teardown.
  • ZIF ribbons must be released at their actual locking member before withdrawal and secured after full insertion. The OEM pages identify connectors but do not specify a universal latch direction; no up/down/slide direction is assumed. Stop if the actual latch or routing cannot be identified without force.
  • Use only the illustrated keyboard release hole near the fan. If its location or the three symbol-marked screws do not match the machine, stop and resolve the model/configuration before pressing a tool into the chassis.
  • The 850 G5 keyboard procedure explicitly includes a separate pointing-stick ribbon. Keep this third ribbon in the disconnect/reconnect sequence, in addition to the main and optional backlight ribbons.

Tools and preparation

  • Phillips P0 screwdriver (printed pp. 33; PDF pp. 43).
  • Case-removal tool, preferably nonmarking (printed pp. 33, 39; PDF pp. 43, 49).
  • Screwdriver or similar thin tool for illustrated release hole (printed pp. 48; PDF pp. 58).
  • Grounded ESD work surface and wrist strap; organized part/screw storage (printed pp. 33, 35, 36, 37; PDF pp. 43, 45, 46, 47).

A Torx driver is not needed for this keyboard-only sequence: the main battery remains installed and only its cable is disconnected. Protect fragile ribbons and do not work with external power connected.

Documented US-English keyboard options

Base and regional tables: HP printed p.47 / PDF p.57. Replace the variable regional suffix of each OEM base with the United States -001 suffix. The full numbers below are explicitly derived compositions, not individually printed serial-specific fit approvals.

Derived US numberOEM baseDocumented variant
L14367-001L14367-xx1no backlight
L14366-001L14366-xx1backlit
L29477-001L29477-xx1backlit, privacy models

Keep the selected backlight/privacy configuration. A listed option does not authorize conversion between variants, models or generations.

Ordered removal and reassembly

1. Identify and isolate power

Applies: all documented keyboard variants. Phase: preparation.

Confirm the service label identifies HP EliteBook 850 G5 and select the documented US keyboard variant. Save work and shut down through the operating system; if sleep/hibernation is uncertain, start the machine and perform a normal shutdown. Disconnect external devices. Unplug the AC power cord from the outlet first, then unplug the adapter from the laptop. Use the grounded workstation and ESD handling described on printed pp.35-37.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 35, 36, 37, 38, 47; PDF pp. 45, 46, 47, 48, 57.

2. Remove bottom cover

Applies: all documented keyboard variants. Phase: preparation.

Place the closed computer upside down on a flat surface. Loosen the 8 ordinary-position captive screws and the two inset captive screws shown on printed p.39; leave captive screws with the cover. Begin beneath the middle of the display and release/lift off the cover as in the diagram; use a suitable nonmarking case tool to protect the plastic. Avoid excessive force and keep each removed part away from the work area.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 33, 38, 39; PDF pp. 43, 48, 49.

3. Disconnect main battery cable

Applies: all documented keyboard variants. Phase: preparation.

Find the battery connector in the diagram on printed p.51 / PDF p.61 and unplug its cable from the system board, handling the connector rather than pulling the wires. Leave the battery physically installed. The keyboard prerequisite specifies cable disconnection; its procedure does not require removal of the battery Torx screws.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 34, 51, 47; PDF pp. 44, 61, 57.

4. Remove three keyboard screws

Applies: all documented keyboard variants. Phase: removal.

From the open underside, remove the three Phillips M2.0 x 3.0 screws identified by keyboard symbols in the keyboard diagram on printed p.48 / PDF p.58. Retain all three separately from the cover fasteners. Do not loosen the neighboring fan or heat-sink screws.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 47, 48; PDF pp. 57, 58.

5. Release keyboard through the illustrated hole

Applies: all documented keyboard variants. Phase: removal.

Locate the release hole near the fan in the same diagram, callout 2. Insert a screwdriver or similarly thin tool through that hole and press against the back of the keyboard until it releases. Remove the tool. The ribbons are still connected: support the keyboard and do not pull it away from the base. The manual provides no tool-insertion depth or force value; do not invent one or probe other holes.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 48; PDF pp. 58.

6. Turn upright and rotate keyboard onto palm rest

Applies: all documented keyboard variants. Phase: removal.

Position the machine upright with its front toward you, then open the display as far as its normal hinge travel permits. Lift the top edge of the keyboard to disengage it and rotate the keyboard over onto the palm rest along the path in the illustration. Keep it supported with slack in the ribbons; it must rest on the palm rest before cable disconnection.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 48; PDF pp. 58.

7. Disconnect optional backlight ribbon

Applies: backlight cable fitted. Phase: removal.

If a backlight cable is fitted, identify its system-board ZIF connector, callout 2 on printed p.49 / PDF p.59. Release that connector locking member and slide the ribbon free while the keyboard remains supported. Handle the ribbon carefully and do not pry the soldered connector housing. The non-backlit variant skips this ribbon only.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 34, 48, 49; PDF pp. 44, 58, 59.

8. Disconnect pointing-stick ribbon

Applies: all documented keyboard variants. Phase: removal.

Release the system-board ZIF connection for the pointing-stick cable, callout 3 on printed p.49 / PDF p.59, and withdraw that ribbon while the keyboard remains on the palm rest. This is a separate connection from both the backlight and the wide main keyboard ribbon.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 34, 48, 49; PDF pp. 44, 58, 59.

9. Disconnect main keyboard ribbon and remove keyboard

Applies: all documented keyboard variants. Phase: removal.

Release the main keyboard ribbon at its system-board ZIF connector, callout 4 on printed p.49 / PDF p.59, and withdraw the ribbon. Confirm all three fitted ribbons (or the two on a non-backlit keyboard) are free before lifting the keyboard off the palm rest, removal callout 5. No hidden adhesive-removal or additional cable step is specified in this model procedure.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 34, 49; PDF pp. 44, 59.

10. Reconnect replacement ribbons with keyboard supported

Applies: all documented keyboard variants. Phase: reassembly.

Compare the replacement layout, backlight/privacy variant and cable positions with the removed keyboard before installation. Place the replacement over the palm rest in the same supported orientation used for disconnection. Following HP's reverse-installation instruction, reconnect the main keyboard ribbon first, then the separate pointing-stick ribbon, then the backlight ribbon if fitted. At each ZIF connector, keep its locking member released while inserting the ribbon squarely to its normal seated position, then secure that member. Do not force an unidentified latch or route a ribbon under a sharp edge.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 34, 47, 49; PDF pp. 44, 57, 59.

11. Seat keyboard and restore its three screws

Applies: all documented keyboard variants. Phase: reassembly.

Reverse the illustrated rotation from the palm rest into the keyboard opening and seat the keyboard using the reverse of the top-edge release movement. Keep the ribbons clear so they are not pinched or pulled taut. Close and turn the laptop over on the flat work surface; reinstall the three original Phillips M2.0 x 3.0 screws at the keyboard-symbol positions. If the keyboard does not sit evenly, stop and check ribbon routing and engagement rather than tightening screws to pull it into place. HP gives no torque specification in this procedure.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 34, 47, 48, 49; PDF pp. 44, 57, 58, 59.

12. Reconnect battery and close enclosure

Applies: all documented keyboard variants. Phase: reassembly.

Before reconnecting the main battery, inspect ribbon connections and account for all three keyboard screws. Reconnect the battery cable at the p.51 connector. Refit the bottom cover by reversing the p.39 cover-removal sequence and secure all 10 captive screws (8 ordinary-position plus two inset). Restore external power only after the cover is installed.

Evidence: HP manual, printed pp. 34, 38, 39, 51, 49; PDF pp. 44, 48, 49, 61, 59.

Suggested checks - not performed

  • PROPOSED, not performed: confirm normal startup and that the replaced keyboard is recognized.
  • PROPOSED, not performed: check all keys and modifiers with the correct US layout, including function/hotkey behavior and the separate numeric keypad.
  • PROPOSED, not performed: check the pointing stick and associated buttons, and the keyboard backlight/privacy control where fitted. These checks do not imply that the 830 G5 has a separate pointing-stick ribbon.
  • PROPOSED, not performed: check the TouchPad still operates, the keyboard sits evenly, and battery/charging indication is normal after AC reconnection. If a fault appears, shut down and disconnect AC before reopening.

No unresolved mechanical step was found for the configuration illustrated in this manual. Latch direction, insertion depth and torque values absent from the OEM procedure are not invented. Hardware mismatch requires stopping the affected step, and no universal serial-specific fit or warranty eligibility is claimed.
