Step-by-step HP EliteBook 850 G5 RAM replacement paraphrased from HP's official Maintenance and Service Guide, with page citations.

Source: paraphrased from HP's official Maintenance and Service Guide (PDF, printed pages 33–39, 41–42, 51). Not bench-tested. We have not performed this repair; keep HP's manual open for its illustrations. Scope restrictions below are part of the guide: do not apply it to other models, generations or configurations. Service manuals are written for trained technicians; work at your own risk.

Applies to

HP EliteBook 850 G5. Confirm the exact model on the service label before starting.

Scope and notes

HP requires updating to the latest applicable BIOS before adding memory. Perform any required update while the laptop is assembled, following current HP instructions. For managed devices, coordinate firmware updates with the administrator. The historical manual UI instructions are not assumed to describe the current HP website.

If installing one module, use socket 1. Socket 2 is expansion memory. Listed module sizes are spare options, not proof of maximum system capacity.

Tools

Phillips driver suitable for bottom-cover screws, case-removal tool, grounded static-safe work surface and screw organizer. Handle memory by edges.

Documented OEM spare options

  • 862398-850 — 8 GB DDR-2400; printed p.41.
  • 865396-850 — 16 GB DDR-2400; printed p.41.

Confirm exact product/configuration before ordering.

Preparation

  1. Check the service label identifies HP EliteBook 850 G5. Confirm the replacement against the exact product configuration before purchase. These instructions do not establish compatibility with a different generation or every aftermarket component.
  2. Save work and shut down through the operating system. Disconnect external devices. Unplug the AC power cord from the outlet, then disconnect the adapter from the laptop. Work on a grounded, static-safe surface and keep fasteners organized. Consult the manual preliminary requirements and grounding sections before opening.
  3. Place the closed laptop upside down on a flat surface. Loosen the 8 captive screws and 2 inset captive screws shown on printed page 39 (PDF page 49); leave captive screws with the cover.
  4. Starting beneath the middle of the display, release and lift the bottom cover as shown on printed page 39. Use an appropriate nonmarking opening tool.
  5. Disconnect the battery cable from the system board using the connector location on printed page 51 (PDF page 61). Keep force on the connector rather than the wires. Battery removal is not a prerequisite for RAM/SSD in these OEM procedures; cable disconnection is.

Replacement

  1. After completing preparation and battery-cable disconnection, spread the retaining tabs on both sides of the memory module. Its free edge rises (printed pp. 41–42).
  2. Pull the released module away from its socket at the raised angle. Handle its edges and avoid touching contacts or components.
  3. Align the replacement notch with the socket key, seat it at the removal angle and lower it until the retaining tabs hold it. If using one module, install in socket 1. Repeat only for the module being replaced.
  4. Reconnect the battery cable. Refit the bottom cover by reversing removal and secure its captive screws before reconnecting external power.

After assembly

Suggested check, not performed: verify the expected memory total in firmware or the operating system and run an appropriate memory diagnostic if required.
