Step-by-step HP EliteBook 850 G5 SSD replacement paraphrased from HP's official Maintenance and Service Guide, with page citations.

Source: paraphrased from HP's official Maintenance and Service Guide (PDF, printed pages 33–40, 51). Not bench-tested. We have not performed this repair; keep HP's manual open for its illustrations. Scope restrictions below are part of the guide: do not apply it to other models, generations or configurations. Service manuals are written for trained technicians; work at your own risk.

Labels: DOCUMENTED = taken from HP's manual; PROPOSED = our own joining or ordering of HP's directions, not an HP instruction; UNPERFORMED = a suggested check that has not been carried out.

Applies to

HP EliteBook 850 G5. Confirm the exact model on the service label before starting.

Scope and notes

Back up required data and prepare recovery/migration before opening. Mechanical replacement does not copy the OS, encryption recovery information or personal files.

The OEM table includes multiple drive technologies/options. This guide does not validate every aftermarket drive, capacity upgrade or SATA/PCIe/Optane conversion. No SSD spare mapping is added by this procedure-only guide.

Tools

Phillips driver suitable for bottom-cover screws, case-removal tool, grounded static-safe work surface and screw organizer. SSD replacement needs a Phillips driver suitable for M2.0×2.0.

Preparation

  1. Check the service label identifies HP EliteBook 850 G5. Confirm the replacement against the exact product configuration before purchase. These instructions do not establish compatibility with a different generation or every aftermarket component.
  2. Save work and shut down through the operating system. Disconnect external devices. Unplug the AC power cord from the outlet, then disconnect the adapter from the laptop. Work on a grounded, static-safe surface and keep fasteners organized. Consult the manual preliminary requirements and grounding sections before opening.
  3. Place the closed laptop upside down on a flat surface. Loosen the 8 captive screws and 2 inset captive screws shown on printed page 39 (PDF page 49); leave captive screws with the cover.
  4. Starting beneath the middle of the display, release and lift the bottom cover as shown on printed page 39. Use an appropriate nonmarking opening tool.
  5. Disconnect the battery cable from the system board using the connector location on printed page 51 (PDF page 61). Keep force on the connector rather than the wires. Battery removal is not a prerequisite for RAM/SSD in these OEM procedures; cable disconnection is.

Replacement

  1. After completing preparation and battery-cable disconnection, remove the single Phillips M2.0×2.0 screw retaining the SSD (printed p. 40).
  2. Pull the SSD away from its connector as shown in the manual (printed p. 40). Avoid twisting the socket.
  3. Align the replacement notch with the connector and install by reversing removal. Reinstall the original retaining screw.
  4. Reconnect the battery cable, refit the bottom cover and secure its captive screws before reconnecting external power.

After assembly

Suggested check, not performed: confirm firmware detects the replacement drive and complete the separately planned OS/data restoration. Successful detection or boot is not established by this guide.
