Scope and notes

This guide covers display panel replacement in the HP Fortis 14 G10 Chromebook. HP places it in chapter 5, "Removal and replacement procedures for authorized service provider parts" (printed p.31): authorized service providers only.

The display section states: "Full hinge-up displays are not available as spare parts. Spare parts for displays are available only at the subcomponent level" (printed p.48); this guide covers the panel inside the assembly.

Tools

Tweezers, nonconductive nonmarking pry tool, and magnetic Phillips P1 screwdriver (HP "Tools required", printed p.22); use a grounded, static-safe surface.

Documented OEM spare options

Printed on p.17-18 (Table 3-2) and p.53.

Preparation

  1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (printed p.31): turn it off, unplug the power cord, disconnect all external devices.
  2. Remove the bottom cover (printed p.31-32): remove the two Phillips M2.5 × 8.6 and four Phillips M2.0 × 4.7 screws, loosen the three captive Phillips M2.5 × 7.6 screws, release the rear edge with a nonmarking, nonconductive tool, and remove it.
  3. Disconnect the battery cable from the system board (printed p.34).
  4. Release the adhesive support strip and connector bar securing the display panel cable to the system board, disconnect the panel cable, and release it from the retention clip (printed p.48).
  5. Take out the two Phillips M2.0 × 3.4 screws (1) that hold the WLAN module bracket and the WWAN module bracket to the system board, take both brackets off, and unplug the WWAN antenna cables from the module terminals (printed p.48).
  6. Remove the four Phillips M2.5 × 5.1 screws securing the display assembly, remove the left and right hinge brackets, swing the hinges up and back, open the display assembly, and separate the computer from it (printed p.49-50).

Replacement

  1. Take off the display bezel (printed p.50): flex its bottom edge and the inner edges of the left and right sides, flex the top, and pull the bezel away from the display panel assembly.
  2. Remove the display hinges (printed p.51): remove the eight Phillips M2.5 × 2.5 broadhead screws and the two Phillips M2.5 × 2.4 screws securing them to the display back cover, and remove them.
  3. Remove the display panel (printed p.51-52): the panel is held to the display back cover by tape under the left and right sides. Grasp the tape end with tweezers, wrap it around them while turning, pull it out from behind the panel, repeating until removed.
  4. Free the display panel cable out of the retention clips (1) and the routing channel in the bottom edge of the display back cover. Before the panel is laid upside down, make sure the work surface holds no tools or debris that could scratch the panel surface (printed p.52).
  5. Raise the top edge of the panel and tip it up and forward so it lies face down in front of the display back cover, release the adhesive support strip and the retention bar that hold the panel cable to the back of the panel, then unplug the panel cable and take the panel away (printed p.52).

Reassembly

  1. Rebuild the display assembly by working back through the printed removal steps in the opposite order (printed p.56).
  2. Put the display assembly back together (printed p.52): seat the replacement panel in the display back cover with tape under the left and right sides again, return the panel cable to the retention clips and routing channel in the bottom edge of the display back cover, then refit the bezel, the hinges and the hinge brackets.
  3. Plug the battery cable back into the system board and fit the battery into place again, then refit the bottom cover (printed p.34).

> IMPORTANT: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer.
