Scope and notes

This guide covers WLAN module replacement in the HP Fortis 14 G10 Chromebook. HP places the procedure in chapter 5, "Removal and replacement procedures for authorized service provider parts" (printed page 31); its introduction limits those components to authorized service providers.

The WLAN module removal procedure is printed on pages 36–37. Its prerequisite steps point to "Preparation for disassembly" on printed page 31, to the bottom cover on printed pages 32–33 and to the battery on printed page 33; the cited pages run from 31 to 37.

HP documents two wireless modules separately: the WLAN module section (printed pages 36–37) covers the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 card, and the WWAN module section (printed pages 34–36) the cellular Intel XMM 7360 LTE-Advanced card. Both are listed below as HP prints them; the procedure applies to the AX201 entry.

Tools

Tweezers, a nonconductive nonmarking pry tool, and a magnetic Phillips P1 screwdriver (HP "Tools required", printed page 22).

Confirm the exact product and configuration before ordering.

Preparation

  1. Read the chapter 4 preliminary requirements (printed page 22) for the initial safety procedures.
  2. Prepare the computer for disassembly (printed page 31): turn it off, or turn it on and shut it down through the operating system if it is unclear whether it is off or in hibernation; unplug the power cord; disconnect external devices.
  3. Remove the bottom cover (printed pages 32–33): remove the two Phillips M2.5 × 8.6 screws, loosen the three captive Phillips M2.5 × 7.6 screws and remove the four Phillips M2.0 × 4.7 screws; use a nonmarking, nonconductive tool to release the rear edge, then remove the cover. The manual's cross-reference for this step reads "see Battery on page 33".
  4. Disconnect the battery cable from the system board (printed page 34), remove the four Phillips M2.0 × 3.4 screws that secure the battery to the computer, and remove the battery.

Replacement

  1. Take out the Phillips M2.0 × 3.4 screw (1) that fastens the WLAN module to the system board; once it is out, the WLAN module tilts up (printed page 36).
  2. Remove the WLAN module bracket, supplied in the Bracket Kit under a separate number not listed above (printed page 36).
  3. Disconnect the WLAN antenna cables from the terminals on the WLAN module (printed page 37).
  4. Pull the WLAN module out of the slot at an angle and take it away from the computer (printed page 37).
  5. If a WLAN antenna is not connected to the module terminal, install a protective sleeve on the antenna connector (printed page 37).

Reassembly

  1. Seat the WLAN module in the slot, plug the antenna cables back into the terminals on the WLAN module, refit the WLAN module bracket, and put the Phillips M2.0 × 3.4 screw (1) back in place (printed page 36). Fit a protective sleeve on the antenna connector if the antenna was not plugged in.
  2. Put the battery back (printed page 34): set the pack in the battery bay, plug the battery cable into the system board, and refit the four Phillips M2.0 × 3.4 screws (2).
  3. Refit the bottom cover by reversing its removal (printed page 32): seat the cover and put the two Phillips M2.5 × 8.6, three captive Phillips M2.5 × 7.6 and four Phillips M2.0 × 4.7 screws back.

> IMPORTANT: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the computer.
