How to replace the ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 keyboard

The T14 Gen 1 keyboard is removed from the top with a pry tool (HMM FRU 1010), and the keyboard language must be set in UEFI BIOS afterwards.

Source: every step below is paraphrased from the official ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 and P14s Gen 1 Hardware Maintenance Manual (Sixth Edition, February 2025) (Lenovo, pp. 68-70). Screw sizes and torque values are quoted from the manual's own tables. The manual's illustrations show each step, so keep it open while you work. Service manuals are written for trained technicians; work at your own risk.

Applies to

ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 (Intel) and ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 (AMD)

Before you start

  • Disable the built-in battery first, as the HMM requires before replacing any part.

Tools

  • Keyboard pry tool (shipped with some replacement keyboards) or another plastic pry tool

Steps

  1. Turn off Fast Startup in Windows. In Control Panel (Large or Small icons view), open Power Options, choose "Choose what the power buttons do", click "Change settings that are currently unavailable", clear "Turn on fast startup" and save.
  2. Disable the built-in battery in ThinkPad Setup. Restart and press F1 at the logo screen to enter ThinkPad Setup. Go to Config > Power, choose "Disable built-in battery", and confirm with Yes. The computer powers off by itself; Lenovo says to wait three to five minutes for it to cool.
  3. Remove the nano-SIM tray if fitted. If the computer has a nano-SIM card, remove the card and its tray before servicing, and reinstall them firmly afterwards.
  4. Pry out the keyboard. Follow the HMM illustrations (steps a to d) to lift the keyboard out of the keyboard bezel. If the new keyboard did not come with Lenovo's special tool, the manual says another pry tool can be used.
  5. Connect the new keyboard. Make sure all keyboard connectors are attached firmly before seating it.
  6. Set the keyboard layout. Enter UEFI BIOS and select the keyboard language under Config > Keyboard/Mouse > Keyboard Layout.
