How to replace the ThinkPad T480 batteries (removable and built-in)

The T480 has two batteries: a removable rear battery and a built-in front battery under the base cover. Lenovo's HMM covers both (FRU 1010 Removable battery and FRU 1120 Built-in battery).

Source: every step below is paraphrased from the official ThinkPad T480 Hardware Maintenance Manual (First Edition, January 2018) (Lenovo, pp. 64-67 and 79-80). Screw sizes and torque values are quoted from the manual's own tables. The manual's illustrations show each step, so keep it open while you work. Service manuals are written for trained technicians; work at your own risk.

Before you start

  • Lenovo: use only the authorized battery specified for your computer; any other battery could ignite or explode.
  • Lenovo recommends running its battery diagnostic first; replace a battery only if the test shows it is defective, it is physically damaged, or there is a safety concern.

Tools

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Plastic pry tool

Steps

  1. Turn off Fast Startup in Windows. In Control Panel (Large or Small icons view), open Power Options, choose "Choose what the power buttons do", click "Change settings that are currently unavailable", clear "Turn on fast startup" and save.
  2. Disable the built-in battery in ThinkPad Setup. Restart and press F1 at the logo screen to enter ThinkPad Setup. Go to Config > Power, choose "Disable built-in battery", and confirm with Yes. The computer powers off by itself; Lenovo says to wait three to five minutes for it to cool.
  3. Remove the removable battery. With the built-in battery disabled, release and remove the removable (rear) battery as shown in the HMM illustration for FRU 1010.
  4. Remove the base cover. Remove the connector cover and loosen the base cover screws. Press the marked points with your thumbs while pivoting the hooks upward to free them, lift the area beside the finger holes, and then remove the base cover in the order shown in the manual.
  5. Remove the built-in battery. Disconnect the built-in battery and remove its two screws, then lift it out. The HMM lists M2 x 3 mm small-head nylon-coated screws (2), black, torque 0.181 Nm (1.85 kgf-cm).
  6. Reassemble. Install the new battery, refit the base cover, apply any labels as described in the manual, and reinstall the removable battery.
